Something of an experiment...

Oh great, a new look.

I admit, it's been months since I've done this, but I don't think I've done much in the way of "interesting nail polish". Well, nothing that didn't involve OPI Shatter, or stick on nails. I have bought a few more bottles than the initial three - there's now a bottle of Pink OPI Shatter (it was for breast cancer), a bottle of Nicole by OPI Gold, a grey, a maroon (both by Rimmel) and Gone Gonzo from the OPI 2011 Christmas Range. I always buy a bottle from the Xmas range. Turns out I couldn't deal with just three bottles - I mean, who could? I am getting by without the nail art brushes, but I miss them often, especially when I have a good combination of colours and I realise that nothing could be better than a fern pattern drawn in maroon, or possibly purple, on my new grey.

But today, I did something new and experimental. Well, new for me. It's a type of design, pointed out to me by a very good friend, via youtube.

Basically, you get a glass of water (or, in my case, an empty peanut butter jar) and you select a few different colours. The original I watched used 3, but I opted for 2 (I don't have enough variety for 3, and State of Origin is stopping me wearing anything blue or that even has blue in its make up). I used my new grey, and my old pink. Basically, you drop a drop of nail polish in the centre (I used pink) of the water, and then a drop of the next colour and so on ad infinitum. It's meant to fill out the jar, and go in all these even lines. You then can draw a pattern in the nail polish, cover around the nail with tape, and then dip the nail in so it picks up the pattern. Doesn't sound too hard, does it? And it looks awesome.

At least, that is what I thought. But as patience has never been my strong point, I found out quickly that this may not be the *best* technique for me. I dropped a drop of pink, and then of grey and they both spread out nicely. But then I dropped another pink, and another grey, and another pink and another grey, and they stopped spreading. The pink was about 0.5mm thick and the grey just overpowered it. I don't know if this is because they were different brands, with different consistencies, or if it was because the pink is sparkly where the grey is plain. It just didn't want to work properly. So I gave up before the jar was full, and started attempting to draw patterns in it. That worked - I don't know what I was going for exactly, but something happened. And I dipped my nail in, with the rest of my thumb covered in tape, and took it out again. This was also a mistake - I think I should have left it in the water until the nail polish dried around it, but I was not kidding when I said I was impatient.

Anyway, once I had done all that - this was the finished object

While I do love the effect - that really doesn't show the shine of the pink - it was a bit too time consuming just to do one nail. I did attempt another nail but the nail polish dried too much on the water, or something, so when I tried to do a design, it just got picked up in the water and ended up twirled around my cuticle stick. Mind you, I'll definitely try it again once I'm home in Oz and I have a normal amount of nail polish to choose from. That are all the same brand.

And that is in less than 3 months now - which is really exciting. Kitty cuddles and baby nieces and my favourite chocolate bars. In less than 3 months.
